What is a monochromatic outfit?

Before we get started what does monochromatic even mean? Mono means one, and chroma refers to color hence an outfit that is one color. It’s one of the simplest and easiest ways to look put together with minimal effort.

+Pick one color and stick to it

We start out pretty straightforward by picking one single color that the whole look will revolve around. While I may be bias toward neutrals for beginners, you really can use any color. Colors such as white, black, or brown are just the easiest to get that uniform look. I will admit as chic as all white looks are if you are prone to spilling white may not be the color for you.

The easiest way to know which color to try is by examining your wardrobe to see what color appears most often, this will allow you more options to mix and match from. You do not need to exact color match each piece, in fact I recommend the exact opposite. Play around with different tones and shades of a particular color to add slight contrast and interest to the look. You can see in my all white look my coat and hat are more of a cream as opposed to my tank and jeans which are more of a stark white.

But wait before you jump right into choosing your pieces make note that not every color is going to be flattering. For example I personally stay away from certain beige shades because they completely wash me out. Maybe yellow just isn’t your thing whatever it may be go with what you feel most comfortable in for you, your skin tone and body type.

+Start with the basics

Now that we have locked down our color let’s get to picking out our pieces. There is no need to go buy a whole new wardrobe, utilize what you already own and form a base that can easily be built upon like simple tees and bottoms.

Most are surprised to find out most of my outfits are thrifted or from affordable stores like Target or Walmart. Fashion doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive, it all comes down to how you pair your pieces. In this all white look I mix basics like a $3 Walmart tank top with a pea coat as my statement piece.

+Layer and add texture for added dimension

Anyone can put together a white t shirt and white pants and call it a day but what makes an outfit look elevated is adding accessories, jackets, etc that help emphasis the color scheme and add visual interest. I like to incorporate hats, bags, sunglasses, jewelry, jackets and other pieces all of which make a huge difference in how a look comes together. Don’t be afraid to play around with textures too. Mixing and matching with wool, leather, cotton, suede or denim are all fair game.

+Strive for balance

As with any look try to strike a good balance between not too tight or too loose, goldilocks if you will. For example, when pairing a flowy blouse consider doing a more tapered bottom to counteract the top. You can see how I do this in my all white look by pairing a fitted tank top with a more oversized coat.
